Suspended in Time, Sheep in Lock-down ~ Teresa Munby, United Kingdom

Ceramic Sheep

These lambs were made just pre-lockdown, bisque fired in my kiln at home, and are ready for transport to a potter friend’s amazing outdoor firing space and studio where I Raku along with others in wonderful group workshops, and where another four or more sheep are awaiting.

Having made these sheep before, each one a character enhanced by the individuality and unpredictability of the Raku process, I don’t want to “finish them of” in my electric kilns with more ordinary stoneware glazes. So…they wait in our current, slowed-down and more contemplative times.

They may represent the frozen, stopped activities of current, “normal” life, but in their nod to passive movement, sitting obediently in their box, they also serve as a constant reminder to me of the prospect of a renewed life that’s to come - we shall return to group Raku, we’ll appreciate the inter-personal gatherings all the more and, in the meantime, we explore new ways to communicate, and to share our “locked-down” creations.
