Planetary Power Blooms, mixed-media collage made on iPad by M.J. Davison
"I chose Planetary Power Blooms to offer to the Art Under Quarantine project because it is imbued with sunlight, a source of hope in these darker times of less direct connection with each other. It features the planetary seal of Saturn according to Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy. Rays of light reach, touch, and enliven us when social distancing prohibits it. All around us, as linear time as we've known it deconstructs, the persistent cycles of Nature revealed in flowers reassures us that the powerful rhythms of life remain. A dominant element of this composition is of an abstract portrait featuring a diagram of Saturn, the planet of structure representing time. This then shifts to a portrait of myself, the artist. To balance my dual perspectives, I keep the sight of one eye that of Nature's through the symbol of the dandelion, while the other eye remains human. I smile because, with the blooms of Spring going forth, both exuberant and irrepressible, I feel hopeful. As a collage artist, I usually draw from found source material, but this piece is more personal - I generated all the images from moments dating back to the beginning of the COVID quarantine in March. By consciously using my iPad, rather than making the art by hand, I acknowledge a current, greater reliance on technology to communicate ideas and experiences. Thankfully, virtual means of expression are helping us go beyond complete isolation."
