Papancho Cabalgatas Horse Expeditions Peru
Edward Rimachi Yanqui is an expert horseman who has lived and ridden all of his life in high-altitude Andes mountains. As such, he is deeply connected to the natural world, with an intuitive respect and love for earth, water and air. Edward offers customized horseback expeditions from one to twenty one days, each of which is designed to meet client needs and preferences in ways that feel in no way curated. Edward is able to accommodate from one to three people, with all gear carried by separate pack horses. I traveled solo with Edward and one pack animal between us for seven days and six nights in February, 2024. Words cannot convey the magic of our journey. It is perhaps the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done - replete with joy, triumph, revelation, personal growth and change.
Accommodations vary from simple hostels and inns to a room in the home of a local villager, with meals prepared by the family and communally shared.
Departure for all expeditions is typically from Edward’s home in the remote traditional pueblo of Huayqui, in the shadow of Waqra Pukará, an important, exciting and infrequently-visited archaeological site at 14,000 feet above sea level that dates to pre-Incan times (image above right).
Huayqui can be reached by bus from Cuzco via Acomayo, and by car from Cuzco, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and Aguas Caliente, etc.

POET NO. 7
We must be bareback riders. The gods
abhor halters and stirrups, even a horse
blanket to protect our asses is forbidden.
Finally, our legs must grow into the horse
because we were never meant to get off.
